CHAFFEY’S IMPROVED PUMPING ENGINE

Tangyes Pumping Engine
CHAFFEY’S IMPROVED PUMPING ENGINE
made by TANGYES (Birmingham) for
MILDURA IRRIGATION COLONY
I love this place because it has resurrected the era of steam driven engines. This particular leviathan pumped water for irrigation from the Murray River at Psyche Bend from 1890 until 1959 when it was decommissioned. But the “Steamies” of Mildura brought it back to life 50 years later. The Tangyes Pumping Engine is housed in its original building and hisses to life on public holidays and special occasions.
