River Birds Through Foreign Eyes

When I first moved here in 2009 from the US, the birds were so unique to anything I was used to seeing. I am still fascinated by the birds here, and I spend hours sitting on the banks of the river, taking photos of them. I love how they make the river seem alive, colorful, […]

Binoculars on the Wakool

This was taken on our 100 acre block reserved for wildlife on the Wakool River in southern NSW. It’s special because it shows my Dad’s relationship with the river. Binoculars, some salt and nic nacs resting on the sill of the old hut show the recreational aspect, and the interest in the native birds.

About ten years ago work commenced on restoring this magnificent paddle steamer to its original condition – complete with steam engine. […]

The Mildura Bridge

The old Mildura bridge saw service from the 1930’s until the 1990’s. Countless vehicles crossed the Murray River between Victoria and New South Wales on this bridge. Many Paddle Steamers sailed beneath the bridge and in times of high water the centre span of the bridge was raised to allow boats to pass. It has […]

CHAFFEY’S IMPROVED PUMPING ENGINE

Tangyes Pumping Engine CHAFFEY’S IMPROVED PUMPING ENGINE made by TANGYES (Birmingham) for MILDURA IRRIGATION COLONY I love this place because it has resurrected the era of steam driven engines. This particular leviathan pumped water for irrigation from the Murray River at Psyche Bend from 1890 until 1959 when it was decommissioned. But the “Steamies” of […]
