One River commissioned well-known Adelaide-based writer and theatre director, Sean Riley, to develop a radio play called This River. Sean has collaborated with community groups throughout the Murray-Darling Basin to create a new work based on secret, forgotten and never-before-told stories of river life.
A multi-award winner, Sean Riley is a much sought-after workshop leader for young people and emerging artists. He works regularly with Urban Myth Theatre of Youth and has been artist in residency at a wide variety of schools, most recently at Adelaide Secondary School of English, devising performance works with African and Middle Eastern immigrants. Sean’s work is frequently adapted for broadcast on ABC Radio. He has written and directed new work for the Adelaide Festival of Arts, Adelaide Fringe Festival, Urban Myth Theatre of Youth, Come Out Festival and the Australian National Playwrights Conference.
This project asked participant communities to think about their own story and consider what it means to live where they live today, how this influences the way they live and think, and what their aspirations are for the next generation. Through locally delivered workshops with these groups, Sean uncovered rich stories full of the sort of detail you could never invent, and crafted this material into a 50 minute play.
Participants from Canberra Youth Theatre’s program The Seed, which provides an opportunity for playwrights to actively engage with emerging theatre artists, performed the premier live reading of the This River on Tue 4 June 2103.
The play was post-produced and broadcast on community radio. A radio program is currently being put together by ArtSoundFM in Canberra, for broadcast probably in Nov 2013, with the view to having this show broadcast nationally on the community radio network before the end of 2013. After this, an MP3 recording of the play will be accessible from the Radio Play page of the website.
